The summer of 1932 had seen record temperatures recorded in the United Kingdom, but now the nights were drawing in, the trees were taking on their autumn hues and thoughts were turning to Winter.
The Manager of the Municipal and City Bank in Exeter, Mr Douglas Treadwell, was heading home a little later than usual after a busy day at the office, when he was set upon in the streets near Bedford Circus. His briefcase was taken, and he was left by the side of road with fatal injuries.
Was his death simply an opportunist street theft that had gone wrong?
Was there something in the briefcase that the thief was after? Was he silenced because of something he knew or had discovered? Were there family secrets that had caught up with him?
Detective Inspector Appleby was put in charge of the case and his investigations led him to believe that he had four key suspects.
He arranges for the four suspects to attend this evening, and he is calling on the other guests present to help with his investigation. All the clues will be there to identify the culprit, but will they be correctly deduced? Detective Inspector Appleby is determined to get to the truth before the night is over.
